Sri Lanka Grade 7 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Syllabus

This syllabus is implemented by the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Science and Technology, National Institute of Education, Maharagama, Sri Lanka. It was first printed in 2018 and builds upon the Grade 6 ICT curriculum. The time allocated for ICT at Grade 7 is 30 periods (40 minutes per period) per year.

Introduction

The importance of ICT skills is globally recognized for increasing productivity. In Sri Lanka, integrating ICT into the curriculum from Grade 6 aims to address the need for earlier ICT education and reduce the subject load at the G.C.E. (O/L) level. The Grade 7 syllabus emphasizes practical learning, focusing on programming concepts and simple hardware programming.

National Goals

The ICT curriculum aligns with Sri Lanka's national educational goals, which include:

  • Fostering national unity and peace within a multicultural society.
  • Preserving national heritage while addressing global challenges.
  • Promoting social justice, human rights, and responsible citizenship.
  • Encouraging a sustainable lifestyle based on well-being and human values.
  • Developing balanced personalities with creative, critical thinking skills.
  • Developing human resources for individual and national progress.
  • Preparing individuals for a rapidly changing world.
  • Maintaining a respectable place in the international community.

Basic Competencies

The curriculum promotes several key competencies:

  • Communication: Literacy, numeracy, graphics, and ICT skills.
  • Personality Development: Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and values like integrity and respect.
  • Environment: Awareness and skills related to social, biological, and physical environments.
  • World of Work: Skills for economic contribution and vocational development.
  • Religion and Ethics: Ethical, moral, and religious conduct.
  • Play and Leisure: Pleasure, joy, and values like cooperation and teamwork.
  • Learning to Learn: Adaptability and continuous learning in a changing world.

Aims of the ICT Curriculum

The curriculum aims to:

  • Develop basic skills for accessing ICT resources.
  • Develop basic programming concepts.
  • Instill good practices in using ICT resources.
  • Foster computer literacy and a foundation for further ICT studies.

Syllabus Content

The Grade 7 syllabus covers the following competencies:

1. Computer Organization: Identifying CPU components and the evolution of computers. 2. Operating Systems: Exploring different operating systems and managing files and folders. 3. Safety Precautions: Using safety measures to protect hardware and software. 4. Text Editing Software: Developing typing skills using appropriate techniques. 5. Programming: Analyzing problems, using flowcharts, and developing simple programs using Scratch. 6. Presentation Software: Creating presentations using various features. 7. Internet and Web Pages: Using internet resources, communicating online, developing web pages using HTML, and practicing safe and ethical internet usage.
