Sri Lanka Grade 7 School Syllabus - Life Competencies & Civic Education

This syllabus aims to develop well-rounded students equipped with essential life skills and a strong understanding of civic responsibility. The curriculum is divided into two main parts: Life Competencies and Civic Education.

Part I: Life Competencies

This section focuses on developing personal skills and abilities across five key themes:

1. Self-Realization: This theme emphasizes self-dignity, recognizing one's identity, and harnessing beneficial influences while avoiding harmful ones. Students learn to set positive life goals based on their strengths and abilities.

2. Utilizing Leisure for Personality Development: This theme encourages students to engage in meaningful leisure activities, such as sports, hobbies, and aesthetic pursuits, to promote physical and mental well-being and personal growth.

3. Leading an Exemplary Life with Values: This theme focuses on the importance of values for personal and societal well-being. Students explore various values, such as honesty, kindness, and cooperation, and learn how to apply them in their daily lives.

4. Utilizing Data and Information for Effective Learning and Life Situations: This theme equips students with the skills to critically analyze information from various sources, think creatively, and solve problems effectively. They learn to apply these skills in different life situations and for effective learning.

5. Maintaining Good Interpersonal Relationships: This theme highlights the importance of positive relationships for a successful and fulfilling life. Students learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships, resolve conflicts, and work cooperatively with others.

Part II: Civic Education

This section focuses on developing responsible citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities within the family and society.

1. Family Relationships, Rights, and Responsibilities: This theme explores the importance of the family as the basic social unit. Students learn about different family structures, customs, and traditions, and their roles and responsibilities within the family. They also learn about maintaining positive relationships with neighbors.

2. Societal Interrelationships, Rights, and Responsibilities: This theme introduces students to the broader society and the importance of interrelationships between individuals and institutions. They learn about their rights and responsibilities as members of society and the importance of respecting the law.

3. Cultural Heritage, National Unity, and Multiculturalism: This theme explores Sri Lanka's multicultural society and the importance of respecting diverse cultures while valuing one's own. Students learn about national symbols, national unity, and the qualities of a good citizen.

Teaching-Learning Methodology

The syllabus emphasizes a student-centered, competency-based, and activity-oriented approach. The teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding students through exploration, discussion, and presentation of their findings. The teaching-learning process integrates assessment and evaluation to reinforce learning and identify areas for improvement.

Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment and evaluation are integrated into the teaching-learning process. Methods include self-assessment, peer evaluation, portfolio maintenance, project work, and formal assessments. These methods aim to measure students' knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practices related to the competencies outlined in the syllabus.
