Sri Lanka Advanced Level Examination Syllabus - Commerce Stream
The Sri Lanka Advanced Level (A/L) Examination is a national exam administered by the Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka. Students typically sit for the exam after completing two years of A/L studies (grades 12 and 13), following the completion of their GCE Ordinary Level examinations. The A/L examination is highly competitive and serves as the primary pathway for university entrance in Sri Lanka. The Commerce stream is one of the four main streams offered at the A/L, alongside Science, Arts, and Technology.
Commerce Stream Subjects
Students pursuing the Commerce stream are required to select three subjects, with at least two being core Commerce subjects. The core subjects include:
- Accounting: This subject covers financial accounting principles, cost accounting, and management accounting.
- Business Studies: This subject explores various aspects of business organization and management, including marketing, finance, human resources, and operations.
- Economics: This subject delves into economic theories, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international trade.
In addition to these core subjects, students can choose from optional subjects such as Business Statistics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Curriculum and Resources
The curriculum for each subject is designed by the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Sri Lanka. The syllabi outline the learning objectives, key concepts, and assessment criteria for each subject.
Various resources are available to support students in their A/L studies, including textbooks, past papers, and online tutorials. Some schools and educational institutions also offer specialized A/L classes and study programs. Students can also find private tutors for individual or group study sessions.
Career Pathways
The Commerce stream opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities in fields such as accounting, finance, business management, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Many students who complete the Commerce stream pursue higher education in business and management at universities in Sri Lanka or abroad. The A/L Commerce stream provides a strong foundation for professional qualifications such as the Chartered Accountancy (CA) qualification offered by CA Sri Lanka. |
