Sri Lanka Advanced Level (A/L) Examination Syllabus - Common Subjects
The Sri Lanka Advanced Level (A/L) Examination is a crucial step for students aspiring to enter Sri Lankan universities. It is administered by the Department of Examinations under the Ministry of Education. The examination is offered in Sinhala, Tamil, and English mediums.
Common Subjects (for all streams)
All students taking the A/L examination are required to take the following common subjects:
- General English: This subject assesses the student's proficiency in the English language. The syllabus emphasizes key competencies such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- Common General Test (CGT): This test evaluates general knowledge, comprehension, and analytical skills. The CGT consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. A minimum mark of 30% is required for university admission.
Subject Streams
In addition to the common subjects, students must select three subjects within one of the following streams:
- Physical Science: This stream typically includes subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Combined Mathematics.
- Science: Similar to the Physical Science stream, this stream may also offer Biology as a subject choice.
- Commerce: This stream focuses on subjects such as Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, and Business Statistics.
- Arts: This stream offers a wide range of subjects including languages (Sinhala, Tamil, English, etc.), Logic, Political Science, Geography, and various cultural studies.
- Technology: This stream includes subjects related to Engineering Technology and Bio Systems Technology, with a common subject called Science for Technology.
Students must offer a total of six subjects, including the three common subjects and three subjects from their chosen stream. The selection of subjects may have specific requirements depending on the desired university course. |
