Sri Lanka Advanced Level Greek and Roman Civilization
This syllabus introduces students to Greek and Roman Civilization through prescribed literary works (in translation) and selected historical periods. It aims to develop critical analysis, evaluation, and appreciation skills, enabling students to understand their own culture better. The syllabus comprises Greek and Roman Literature and History.
Literature: Covers prescribed Greek and Roman literary texts.
History:
- Greek History: 8th century BC to the death of Alexander in 323 BC.
- Roman History: From the beginning to the death of Augustus Caesar in 14 AD.
It is recommended that Greek History be studied in Grade 12, followed by Roman History in Grade 13.
Grade 12
Term 1:
Literature: Hesiod's Works and Days* (40 periods)
- History: Greece in the 8th century BC (60 periods): Early colonization, Sparta before Lycurgus, Reforms of Lycurgus, Athenian Constitution before Solon, Reforms of Solon, Rise of Tyrannies, Peisistratus's rule in Athens, Cleisthenes's constitutional reforms.
Term 2:
Literature: Euripides's Alcestis* (40 periods)
- History: Persian Wars and the Delian League (30 periods), The Golden Age in Athens (30 periods).
Term 3:
Literature: Sophocles's Philoctetes* (40 periods)
- History: The Peloponnesian War (30 periods), The Post-Peloponnesian War Period (30 periods).
Grade 13
Term 1:
Literature: Aristophanes's Wasps (40 periods), Terence's Mother-in-Law* (40 periods)
- History: Early history of Rome (20 periods).
Term 2:
Literature: Plato's Symposium OR Cicero's On Old Age* (30 periods)
- History: From the Gracchi to Sulla (20 periods), Power struggle in Rome (20 periods).
Term 3:
Literature: Apollonius of Rhodes's Voyage of Argo* (50 periods)
- History: From Julius Caesar to Augustus Caesar (30 periods), Violence in Roman Politics (20 periods), Rome and Provincial Administration (30 periods).
Assessment and Evaluation
School-Based Assessment (SBA) will be implemented. Teachers will prepare creative teaching-learning instruments based on school terms. |
