Sri Lanka Grade 4 English Workbook Activities
This outlines the activities presented in the Sri Lanka Grade 4 English Workbook, published by the Educational Publications Department.
Unit 1: My Family and Friends
- Lesson 1: Matching greetings and introductions, followed by reading and responding to simple questions.
- Lesson 2: Filling in blanks with personal information (name, age, grade) and writing a short self-introduction.
- Lesson 3: Drawing, coloring, and labeling family members in a family photo.
- Lesson 4: Describing family members and their occupations.
- Lesson 5: Drawing and labeling family members based on a poem from the Pupil's Book.
- Lesson 6: Identifying and writing body parts (head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hair, hand, fingers, elbow, leg, knee, toes).
- Lesson 7: Matching names of pets with their type (fish, parrot, calf, dog) and filling in the blanks in a short poem about a bird.
- Lesson 8: Finding and coloring simple words (is, bit, dig, fan, ten, ban, cat, lop) and reading them aloud.
Unit 3: Places Around Me
- Lesson 1: Numbering pictures of places (church, temple, post office, hospital, school, library) and naming them.
- Lesson 2: Identifying places based on their function (e.g., buying stamps at the post office) and completing sentences about places.
- Lesson 3: Following directional instructions (left, right, straight) and describing what can be seen at the end of the path.
- Lesson 4: Drawing and coloring modes of transportation (bus, train, car, aeroplane) and matching them to their destinations. Includes a game involving giving and following directions to different locations.
- Lesson 5: Reading a train announcement and answering questions about the destination, time, and stops.
- Lesson 6: Matching words (beach, playground, children's park) with pictures and rearranging words to form correct sentences about places.
- Lesson 7: Completing sentences in posters about keeping the classroom and environment clean.
- Lesson 8: Describing pictures of places (zoo, park, library) and writing simple sentences about them.
Unit 4: Joy of Work
- Lesson 1: Naming professions (postman, teacher, nurse, doctor, farmer), finding job words in a word search, and matching professions to their workplaces.
- Lesson 2: Finding job words in a newspaper, drawing pictures of different professions, and circling job words.
- Lesson 3: Filling in the blanks with professions of family members and solving puzzles about jobs.
- Lesson 4: Labeling kitchen appliances (blender, gas cooker, rice cooker, refrigerator, spoon, coconut scraper, mortar and pestle), finding kitchen items in a newspaper advertisement, drawing kitchen utensils (knife, plate, spoon, cup and saucer, fork), and naming items in a market basket.
- Lesson 5: Matching actions related to using a TV (press, select, change, watch) with their objects (channel, power button, film, volume) and solving a hidden word puzzle.
- Lesson 6: Completing sentences about cartoon characters using color words and drawing and describing a favorite cartoon character.
- Lesson 7: Drawing faces to indicate whether one can perform certain actions (watering plants, sweeping, flying, scraping coconut, swimming).
- Lesson 8: Finding and writing simple words (box, ten, hen, din, bed, fed, lug, not, beg, pen).
Unit 5: Our Festivals
- Lesson 1: Matching pictures of festivals (Christmas, Deepavali, Ramazan, Vesak, Sinhala & Tamil New Year) with their names.
- Lesson 2: Finding and writing names of festivals and people celebrating them.
- Lesson 3: Finding and writing names of places of worship (church, temple, kovil, mosque).
- Lesson 4: Finding and coloring words related to festivals and places of worship.
- Lesson 5: Completing festival greeting exchanges.
