Sudan Basic Education Grade 3 Curriculum - Mathematics

This curriculum comprehensively covers the Primary 3 Mathematics syllabus as developed by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, Republic of South Sudan. It aims to provide a fun, practical approach to mathematics while equipping students with essential life skills. The curriculum is presented in a Pupil's Book and a Teacher's Guide.

Unit 1: Numbers

This unit focuses on multiplication, division, and fractions. Students will learn to read, write, compare, and order numbers up to four digits. They will also explore subtraction with and without borrowing, and investigate the divisibility test for 2, 5, and 10. Additionally, students will learn about parts of a fraction and compare simple equivalent fractions, understanding the terms numerator and denominator.

Unit 2: Measurement

This unit covers metric units of measurement. Students will engage in practical activities to apply their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to length, capacity, and weight. They will estimate and measure distances in centimeters and meters, becoming familiar with standard units. They will also investigate capacity using liters (l), milliliters (ml), and deciliters (dl) and estimate the weight of different objects in kilograms (kg) and grams (g). Problem-solving involving these measurements will be emphasized. Students will also learn to convert hours to minutes, minutes to seconds, and vice-versa, and apply the use of money in daily life through shopping scenarios.

Unit 3: Geometry

This unit focuses on drawing shapes. Students will learn to draw geometrical shapes accurately, including squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles, applying units of length correctly. They will investigate the properties of these shapes and how they fit together, thinking critically about the importance of different shapes in daily life.

Unit 4: Algebra

This unit introduces comparisons. Students will investigate inequalities and use symbols to compare the values of numbers and objects, using > for "greater than" and < for "less than." They will solve simple problems on inequalities to compare values and their relationships, understanding concepts like "greater than," "less than," "heavier than," "lighter than," "taller than," and "shorter than." They will also learn that a symbol can represent one or more numbers or calculations.

Unit 5: Statistics

This unit focuses on graphs. Students will interpret simple pictographs and block graphs to extract meaningful information. They will learn to create pictographs using pictures and simple objects, and construct block graphs using items like bottle tops. They will also learn to interpret pictographs as block graphs and conduct practical activities, such as measuring leaves, to identify patterns.
