Sudan Basic Education (Grade 8) Curriculum - Mathematics

This curriculum is based on the South Sudan Primary 8 Mathematics syllabus. The course emphasizes a practical approach to mathematics, aiming to equip students with lifelong skills. The curriculum covers six units:

Unit 1: Numbers

  • Factors and Multiples: Students explore factors and multiples of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Squares and Square Roots: Calculation of squares and square roots of perfect squares, fractions, and decimals, including recurring decimals.
  • Conversions: Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Unit 2: Measurement

  • Volume: Calculating the volume of cubes and cuboids, and converting between cubic meters and cubic centimeters.
  • Time, Speed, and Distance: Solving problems involving time, speed, and distance.

Unit 3: Geometry

  • Circles and Triangles: Inscribing and circumscribing circles and triangles.
  • Pythagoras' Theorem: Applying the Pythagorean theorem to determine lengths and areas of triangles.
  • Pyramids and Prisms: Exploring properties of pyramids and prisms, including faces, vertices, and edges.
  • Scale: Understanding and applying scale in drawings and maps.
  • Coordinates: Plotting coordinates and solving problems involving linear scale.

Unit 4: Algebra

  • Algebraic Expressions: Simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions.
  • Word Problems: Translating word statements into algebraic expressions.
  • Sets: Understanding set theory, including union, intersection, empty sets, and equal sets.
  • Venn Diagrams: Representing sets using Venn diagrams.

Unit 5: Statistics

  • Data Collection: Gathering, recording, and interpreting data from various sources.
  • Tables and Graphs: Reading and interpreting tables and graphs, including bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs.
  • Probability: Calculating probabilities of simple events.

Unit 6: Business Accounting

  • Commission: Calculating commission earned on sales.
  • Discounts: Calculating discounts on marked prices.
  • Hire Purchase: Understanding hire purchase agreements and calculating installments.
  • Profit and Loss: Calculating profit and loss in business transactions.
  • Simple Interest: Calculating simple interest on loans.
  • Compound Interest: Calculating compound interest on loans.
  • Cash Accounts: Preparing and balancing cash accounts.
