Sudan Primary 1 Science Syllabus

This syllabus is designed to develop learners' competencies through practical engagement with their environment. It emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes through hands-on activities. The curriculum focuses on four key competencies: critical and creative thinking, communication, cooperation, and culture and identity. These competencies are fostered through scientific investigations, problem-solving, discussions, and collaborative projects. The syllabus also integrates cross-cutting issues such as environmental awareness and sustainability, peace education, and life skills.

Unit 1: Parts of the Body and Hygiene

This unit explores the human body, focusing on different body parts, their names, and how they are connected. Learners investigate the role of bones, joints, and muscles in movement, emphasizing the importance of exercise. Hygiene practices, including washing and proper toilet use, are also covered. Activities include singing songs about body parts, measuring and comparing body part lengths, and creating models to demonstrate how bones and joints work.

Unit 2: Plants and Animals

This unit introduces learners to the diversity of plants and animals in their local environment. Learners observe and compare local plant leaves, identifying similarities and differences. They also learn the names of common plants and local animals, including birds and wild animals, discussing their differences in size and shape. The unit explores the relationship between plants and animals, focusing on how some animals and humans depend on plants for food. Learners also investigate where different plants grow and where animals make their homes.

Unit 3: Our Five Senses

This unit explores the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Learners investigate sources of light and sound, conducting simple experiments. They learn which organs are associated with each sense and how these senses help us understand the world. Activities include blindfolding and wearing gloves to experience sensory deprivation, and observing how animals rely on different senses.

Unit 4: The Weather

This unit focuses on different weather conditions and their impact on human activities. Learners observe and record weather changes, using tools like rain gauges and mirrors to measure rainfall and cloud cover. They learn about the elements of weather, including sun, heat, rain, and wind. The unit also explores the concept of air and its movement, with activities like blowing balloons and making kites.

Unit 5: Soil

This unit introduces learners to the properties of soil. Learners investigate different types of soil, feeling their textures and using sieves to separate soil particles. They learn about mixtures and how they can be separated. Activities include collecting soil samples from different locations, mixing soil with water, and creating models with mud.

Unit 6: Water and Wheels

This unit explores the properties and uses of water. Learners investigate sources of water, learning about evaporation, cloud formation, and rain. They learn how to measure water using different containers and explore the concepts of floating and sinking. Activities include measuring water, experimenting with objects in water, and building water wheels to understand how water can create force.
