Sudan Secondary English - Level 3

This course aims to develop students' English language skills, focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while also fostering critical thinking, cooperation, and communication skills. The curriculum draws upon South Sudanese culture and heritage, promoting a sense of national identity and encouraging responsible citizenship. The course content covers a range of topics relevant to the lives of young South Sudanese, including:

Unit 1: Pollution

This unit explores the various types of pollution, their causes and effects on individuals and society. Students learn specialized vocabulary related to pollution, practice interpreting texts, and develop their communication skills through discussions and presentations. A key activity involves planning a campaign against pollution, designing posters and leaflets to raise awareness. Students also read and critically review fiction related to pollution.

Unit 2: Energy

This unit focuses on energy use, its impact on the economy, and the importance of energy conservation. Students learn about different types of energy generation, research their impact, and plan a campaign for energy conservation. They also read and critically review fiction related to energy.

Unit 3: Violence in Society

This unit examines the causes and effects of violence in society and explores non-violent conflict resolution methods. Students listen to speeches on violence, read relevant documents, and present their findings. They also read fiction and non-fiction about violence and write extended pieces proposing solutions. A key activity involves planning a campaign against violence in the community.

Unit 4: Farming

This unit explores the importance of farming to the economy and the challenges faced by farmers. Students learn specialized vocabulary related to farming, research different types of farming and their impact, and propose ways to improve farming practices. They also read and critically review fiction related to farming.

Unit 5: Wildlife Conservation

This unit focuses on the importance of wildlife conservation for cultural, scientific, and ecological reasons. Students learn about different types of wildlife, the challenges they face, and various conservation methods. They research wildlife conservation efforts in different countries and make presentations. They also read and critically review fiction related to wildlife conservation.

Unit 6: Patriotism

This unit explores the meaning of patriotism and its importance in nation-building. Students learn about the role of patriotism in leadership, research patriots from South Sudan and other countries, and make presentations. They also read and critically review fiction related to patriotism.

Unit 7: Human Rights

This unit examines the concept of human rights, their importance, and how they can be protected. Students learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, research different views of justice, and make presentations. They also read and critically review fiction related to human rights. A key activity involves preparing campaign materials to advocate against human rights violations.
