Sudan Primary 2 Science Curriculum

This curriculum aims to develop learners' competencies through practical interaction with their environment. It emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes through specific learning activities.

Unit 1: Health and Hygiene

This unit focuses on the importance of cleanliness for disease prevention and overall health. Learners explore various hygiene practices, including brushing teeth, washing different body parts, and maintaining personal hygiene. They also learn about germs, how they spread, and how to prevent their transmission. Activities include practicing proper handwashing techniques, designing posters promoting hygiene, and observing how animals keep themselves clean.

Unit 2: Plants and Animals

This unit explores the diversity of plants and animals and their respective habitats. Learners identify different types of plants, their parts, and their functions. They also observe animals in their local environment, differentiating between domestic and wild animals, including minibeasts and birds. Activities include grouping plants and animals according to their habitats, drawing and labeling plant parts, and visiting zoos or national parks to compare different habitats.

Unit 3: Sense Organs

This unit focuses on the five senses and the corresponding sensory organs. Learners investigate how they use their senses to gather information about the world around them. They explore different sounds, their pitches, and volumes, and investigate how echoes are produced. They also learn about shadow formation and how light interacts with objects. Activities include differentiating sounds produced by various objects, experimenting with shadow formation, and discussing how a combination of senses helps in understanding the environment.

Unit 4: The Weather

This unit explores different weather conditions and how humans and animals respond to them. Learners identify weather symbols and learn about weather instruments. They also investigate the importance of air for survival and explore the concept of moving air. Activities include recording weather changes, performing experiments related to air, making kites, and discussing how fur and feathers help animals adapt to cold and wet weather.

Unit 5: Safe Water

This unit focuses on the importance of clean and safe water and different methods of obtaining it. Learners explore various water purification techniques, including decantation, filtration, boiling, and adding chemicals. They investigate the differences between clean and safe water and learn about the dangers of contaminated water. Activities include filtering dirty water, observing the boiling process, and comparing different water purification methods.

Unit 6: Soil

This unit investigates the structure and composition of soil. Learners examine different types of soil, such as clay, sandy, and loam, and compare their properties. They also explore the different layers of soil and investigate the presence of organic matter, water, and air in soil. Activities include examining soil samples, investigating soil layers, and discussing the importance of soil for living things.

Unit 7: Simple Machines

This unit introduces learners to simple machines, specifically rollers and wheels. They learn how these machines help overcome gravity and friction and make work easier. Learners construct simple rollers and investigate their effectiveness on different surfaces. Activities include making and using rollers, designing experiments to test the effectiveness of rollers, and discussing the importance of wheels in various applications.
