This information is based on the South Sudan Arts Guidance document. It details the curriculum framework, rationale, subject strands, progression, assessment, and syllabus units for Primary 4.

Curriculum Framework

The Arts curriculum aims to develop well-rounded individuals by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. It emphasizes practical learning experiences, active participation, and an appreciation of South Sudan's heritage. The curriculum is built on values and principles designed to develop student competencies applicable across all subjects.

Rationale

The Arts play a crucial role in personal and emotional development, enabling learners to express themselves, develop creativity, and build confidence. Through participation in various art forms, students develop critical thinking skills, appreciate diverse perspectives, and gain insights into different cultures.

Subject Strands

The Arts curriculum comprises four interconnected strands:

  • Visual Arts & Craft: This strand focuses on developing skills in two- and three-dimensional work using various media. It balances creating art with appreciating existing artworks from different styles, periods, and cultures.
  • Music and Dance: This strand provides opportunities to listen, respond, perform, choreograph, and compose music and dance pieces. Students explore various musical instruments, vocal techniques, and dance forms, including those from the South Sudanese repertoire.
  • Drama: This strand uses interrelated activities to explore feelings, knowledge, and ideas through drama. Students develop an understanding of the world by exploring themes, issues, and relationships within real, imagined, or historical contexts.
  • Critical Appreciation of the Arts: This strand emphasizes evaluating and appreciating art forms as an integral part of the creative process. It aims to enhance enjoyment and develop creative skills, knowledge, and understanding.

Progression and Assessment

Assessment in the Arts considers all aspects of learning, including the generation of ideas, artistic creation, evaluation skills, and understanding of art forms within a cultural context.
