Sudan Primary 2 Curriculum - Mathematics Course Entries
Unit 1: Numbers: Place Value and Operations
- Reading 3-digit Numbers: Students learn to read and write numbers up to 999. Activities include reading numbers aloud, matching number symbols to their written names, and identifying numbers in real-world contexts.
- Writing 3-digit Numbers: Students practice writing numbers up to 999 in numerical form. Activities include writing numbers represented by pictures or objects, writing number names in numerical form, and transcribing spoken numbers.
- Ordering Numbers: Students learn to compare and order numbers up to 999. Activities include arranging numbers from smallest to largest and vice versa, identifying the smallest and largest numbers in a set, and using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols.
- Addition & Subtraction Using a Number Line: Students use a number line to visualize and perform addition and subtraction. Activities include adding and subtracting single-digit and double-digit numbers, and solving word problems involving addition and subtraction.
- Place Value: Students learn to identify the place value of digits in 3-digit numbers (hundreds, tens, and ones). Activities include using an abacus or other manipulatives to represent numbers, writing the place value of underlined digits, and identifying digits representing specific place values.
- Addition of Numbers up to 3 Digits (with Carrying): Students learn to add 3-digit numbers, including problems that require carrying. Activities include solving vertical addition problems and word problems involving addition.
- Subtraction of Numbers up to 3 Digits (without Borrowing): Students learn to subtract 3-digit numbers without borrowing. Activities include solving vertical subtraction problems and word problems involving subtraction.
- Rounding Off: Students learn to round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. Activities include using a rounding chart and rounding off given numbers.
- Multiplication: Students are introduced to multiplication as repeated addition. Activities include representing multiplication with objects, completing multiplication tables, and solving word problems involving multiplication.
- Division: Students are introduced to division as sharing. Activities include sharing objects equally, writing division sentences, and solving word problems involving division.
- Fractions: Students are introduced to fractions as parts of a whole, focusing on halves, thirds, and quarters. Activities include folding paper to represent fractions, coloring parts of shapes to represent fractions, and solving word problems involving fractions.
Unit 2: Measurement: Metric Units, Money, and Time
- Length: Students learn to estimate and measure length using non-standard and standard units (sticks, rulers, meter rules, and tape measures). Activities include measuring classroom objects, distances within the school, and solving word problems involving length.
- Mass: Students learn to estimate and compare the weight of objects using non-standard units (e.g., 1 kg of soil) and a beam balance. Activities include comparing the weight of various objects to a 1 kg reference weight and answering questions about heavier and lighter objects.
- Capacity: Students learn to measure capacity using non-standard and standard units (bottles, cups, calabashes, liters, and half-liters). Activities include filling containers and comparing their capacity, converting between liters and half-liters, and solving word problems involving capacity.
- Money: Students learn to recognize and use South Sudanese currency. Activities include identifying different denominations, calculating total amounts, and making change.
- Giving Change: Students practice calculating change in shopping scenarios. Activities include solving word problems involving buying items and determining the amount of change received.
- Shop Price List: Students use a price list to calculate the cost of items and practice making change.
- Time: Students learn to tell time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour, and three-quarter-hour. Activities include reading clock faces, drawing clock faces to represent specific times, and discussing daily activities and their associated times.
Unit 3: Geometry: Common Shapes
- Shapes: Students learn to identify and name common shapes, including rectangles, triangles, circles, squares, and ovals. Activities include identifying shapes in pictures and real-world objects, drawing shapes, and creating crafts using different shapes.
- Patterns: Students learn to create and identify patterns using different shapes. Activities include making patterns with cut-out shapes, drawing patterns, and identifying missing shapes in patterns.
- Properties of Triangles: Students learn about the properties of triangles, including the number of sides and angles. Different types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, and scalene) are also introduced.
- Properties of Squares: Students learn about the properties of squares, including equal sides and right angles.
- Properties of Rectangles: Students learn about the properties of rectangles, including opposite sides being equal and having right angles.
