Sweden Förskoleklass Curriculum - Creative and Aesthetic Forms of Expression

This curriculum is based on the Swedish preschool curriculum, Lpfö18, which also applies to the Förskoleklass. It emphasizes a holistic approach where care, development, and learning are intertwined. Play is central to the curriculum, fostering children's imagination, motor skills, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Creative Expression and Communication

The curriculum encourages children to explore and express themselves through various forms of communication and creative expression.

  • Language Development: The curriculum emphasizes stimulating language development in Swedish through reading aloud, discussions, and exploring different ways of communicating. Children are encouraged to think, learn, and communicate in various contexts. Support is provided for children with other mother tongues or those belonging to national minorities to develop both Swedish and their native language.
  • Aesthetic Forms of Expression: Children are encouraged to experience, portray, and communicate through diverse aesthetic forms such as image, form, drama, movement, singing, music, and dance. They are provided with opportunities to design, shape, and create using various materials and techniques, including digital tools.
  • Mathematics: The curriculum integrates mathematics into the learning process, allowing children to investigate, describe their environment, and solve everyday problems using mathematical concepts.
  • Science and Technology: Children are encouraged to explore and learn about nature, society, and technology. They are given opportunities to develop digital skills and a critical understanding of technology's role in their lives.

Play and Learning

Play is considered fundamental to children's development and learning.

  • The Role of Play: Play is seen as an essential activity that allows children to imitate, fantasize, process impressions, and develop their understanding of themselves and others.
  • Types of Play: The curriculum supports both child-initiated play and play introduced by educators. Children are given opportunities to participate in shared games and activities.
  • Learning through Play: Play is viewed as a means for children to develop motor skills, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and symbolic thinking.

Holistic Development

The curriculum emphasizes a holistic approach to children's development and well-being.

  • Care, Development, and Learning: These aspects are integrated to create a supportive and enriching learning environment.
  • Individual and Group Interaction: The curriculum promotes children's ability to function both independently and within a group, fostering cooperation, conflict resolution, and understanding of rights and responsibilities.
  • Health and Well-being: Physical activity, nutritious meals, and a healthy lifestyle are integrated into the daily routine to promote children's overall well-being.
