Sweden Förskoleklass Curriculum - Mathematical Reasoning and Forms of Expression

Introduction

Förskoleklass (pre-school class) in Sweden is the first year of compulsory schooling, for children around age 6. It bridges the gap between preschool and primary school, focusing on play-based learning and preparing children for formal education. Mathematical reasoning and forms of expression are key components of the Förskoleklass mathematics curriculum.

Curriculum Goals

The curriculum aims to develop children's mathematical thinking and language awareness through various activities and assessments. The focus is on introducing basic mathematical concepts and fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of providing early support to students who may be struggling with mathematical concepts.

Assessment

The Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) mandates the use of "Hitta språket" and "Hitta matematiken" to assess students' skills in language and mathematics. These assessments help teachers identify students who may need extra support or challenges. The assessments are conducted in groups during the fall semester.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Mathematical Thinking: The curriculum encourages children to explore mathematical concepts through play and hands-on activities. This includes developing number sense, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Forms of Expression: Children are encouraged to express their mathematical understanding through various forms, including verbal explanations, drawings, and physical demonstrations. This helps them to communicate their thinking and make connections between different mathematical concepts.
  • Language Development: The curriculum emphasizes the connection between language and mathematical understanding. Children are encouraged to use mathematical language and vocabulary to describe their thinking and reasoning.

Teacher Training

Skolverket provides training courses for preschool teachers teaching in Förskoleklass, including a course on mathematics learning. This course covers basic mathematics learning, subject didactics, and methodology.

Curriculum Revision

Skolverket is currently revising the mandatory assessment materials for Förskoleklass and grade 1. The revised materials will be piloted in the fall of 2025 and will become mandatory from July 1, 2026. The revision aims to make the materials more accurate and effective in identifying students' needs.
