Modern Languages (Optional)

Modern Languages, also known as the second foreign language in the Swedish curriculum, is an optional subject that begins no later than year 6 of compulsory school. Students typically make their language choice (Språkval) in year 5 and commence studying the chosen language in year 6. Around 70% of students elect to study a second foreign language. A third foreign language may also be offered as an option.

While the specific languages offered may vary between schools, common choices include French, Spanish, and German. Students may also opt for additional instruction in English or Swedish as alternatives to a second foreign language.

The curriculum emphasizes developing all-around communicative skills, including reception (understanding spoken and written language) and production and interaction (expressing oneself and interacting with others in both speech and writing). Students are encouraged to develop correctness, variation, and complexity in their language use, as well as strategies for supporting communication when language skills are lacking. The curriculum also aims to foster curiosity in language and culture, promoting multilingualism and language awareness. Teaching is primarily conducted in the target language, utilizing various media and real-world resources.
