Sami Curriculum in the Swedish Grundskola

The Sami curriculum is integrated within the Swedish compulsory education system (grundskola). Sami children have the option of attending designated Sami schools or receiving Sami language instruction within regular municipal schools.

Sami schools offer education from grade one to six (ages six to 12). After completing Sami school, students transition to regular grundskola for years 7-9. In these schools, the curriculum follows the standard grundskola framework but incorporates Sami language and cultural components.

In areas without dedicated Sami schools, Sami language instruction is offered as part of the regular curriculum. The extent of Sami language integration varies, with some subjects like science, mathematics, arts, crafts, and physical education being partly taught in Sami up to grade 6.

The Sami curriculum aims to promote bilingualism and preserve Sami cultural heritage. It also addresses the history, traditions, and contemporary issues relevant to the Sami people. However, research suggests that the curriculum may inadvertently prioritize Swedish identity over Sami identity.
