Sweden Year 5 Mathematics Curriculum (Grundskolan)

The Swedish Year 5 mathematics curriculum aims to further develop students' interest and curiosity in mathematics and problem-solving. It builds upon the foundations laid in previous years and prepares students for more advanced mathematical concepts in later grades. Key areas of focus include number sense, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, and problem-solving.

Numbers

Students deepen their understanding of number systems, including natural numbers, fractions, and decimals. They learn to perform operations with these numbers, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Four arithmetic operations: Students practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Fractions and decimals: Students develop their understanding of fractions and decimals, including converting between the two representations.
  • Place value: Students work with larger numbers and deepen their understanding of place value.

Algebra

Students are introduced to basic algebraic concepts, including patterns, variables, and equations. They learn to represent mathematical relationships using symbols and solve simple equations.

Geometry

Students explore geometric shapes and their properties. They learn to calculate area, perimeter, and volume of simple shapes.

Probability and Statistics

Students learn to collect, organize, and interpret data. They are introduced to basic concepts of probability.

Problem-Solving

Problem-solving is integrated throughout the curriculum. Students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.
