Handicrafts (Slöjd) - Sweden Mellanstadiet (Year 4)

Handicrafts, or slöjd as it is known in Swedish, is a compulsory subject within the Swedish education system for students in mellanstadiet (middle school), which includes Year 4. Slöjd emphasizes the development of practical skills, creativity, and problem-solving through working with various materials and tools.

Materials, Tools, and Techniques:

The curriculum for Years 4-6 introduces students to a variety of materials, including metals, textiles, and wood. Students learn about the properties of these materials and explore their potential applications. They are also introduced to various hand tools, instruments, and simple machines, learning their names and how to use them safely and appropriately. The curriculum emphasizes the development of some handicraft techniques, such as crochet and the hollowing out of materials. Students also learn associated terminology.

Working Processes:

The slöjd curriculum emphasizes the entire process of craft creation, from initial idea development to final product evaluation. Students are encouraged to explore different materials and techniques, reflect on important factors influencing their work, and communicate their ideas and assessments. Documentation of the work process, using both words and pictures, is also an important component.

Aesthetic and Cultural Expressions:

Students are exposed to handicraft and craft traditions from various cultures, using these as inspiration for their own creative work. They learn how different combinations of color, form, and materials can influence the aesthetic expression of craft objects. The curriculum also explores the use of symbols and colors within child and youth cultures.

Crafts in Society:

The curriculum highlights the importance of crafts for both individuals and society, both historically and in the present day. Students learn about resource management, including repair and recycling of materials. This aligns with the broader educational goals of sustainable development and responsible resource use.
