Sweden Grundskola Music Curriculum (Year 9)

The Swedish compulsory school system (grundskola) includes music education for students from year 1 through 9. Students are required to have at least 230 hours of music instruction throughout the nine years. Music education in Sweden emphasizes music making, both vocal and instrumental, as the core activity. Group work and collaboration with peers are central to the learning process.

Year 9 represents the final year of högstadiet (junior high school) within the Grundskola. Students typically are 15 years old. Final grades are awarded at the end of year 9, using a six-point grading scale (A-F), where A to E are passing grades. These grades are then used for applications to upper-secondary school (gymnasieskola).

The curriculum for the compulsory school, including music, is set by the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket). The curriculum aims to foster a lifelong desire to learn and instill respect for human rights. In addition to the core curriculum, students in years 7-9 can opt for classes with a specialized focus on music. Extracurricular music education is also available through publicly funded music and arts schools.
