Sweden Grundskola Religion Curriculum - Year 9

Course Description: Religionskunskap (Religion) aims to develop students' knowledge of religion and non-religious belief systems in Swedish society and globally. The course encourages reflection on the role of religion and beliefs in shaping personal identity and societal values. Students explore various religions, ethical models, and life questions to foster critical thinking and responsible decision-making.

Key Concepts (Years 7-9):

  • Religions and Other Belief Systems: Exploring the significance of religion and belief systems in fulfilling human needs for meaning, community, identity, and understanding the world. Examining central tenets of major religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism) and secular belief systems (humanism, atheism). Comparing and contrasting religious interpretations and practices, including variations within religions. Interpreting religious and philosophical symbolism in sacred texts, rituals, and artistic expressions. Understanding the origins, spread, and current geographic distribution of religions.
  • Religion and Society: Critically analyzing how religion and religiosity are portrayed in media and various contexts, and how these portrayals can influence individuals and society. Studying the shift from a state church to religious diversity and secularization in Swedish society. Comparing the role of religion in Sweden with other parts of the world. Examining conflicts and consensus between religious and secular viewpoints on topics such as religious freedom, sexuality, and gender roles.
  • Ethics and Life Questions: Learning about basic principles of ethical models (e.g., consequentialism, deontology). Analyzing and reflecting on ethical issues using personal arguments, religious interpretations, secular perspectives, and ethical models. Discussing and reflecting on life questions (e.g., identity, love, sexuality, meaning of life) using personal thoughts and interpretations from religious and non-religious belief systems.

Assessment:

  • End of Year 9: Students are assessed on their knowledge of religions and belief systems, their ability to discuss similarities and differences in central tenets and practices, and their understanding of the role of religion and belief systems in individuals' lives. They are also evaluated on their ability to discuss the relationship between religion and society, and to reason about ethical, moral, and life questions. Grading (A-E) reflects the depth and development of their knowledge and reasoning skills.
