Curriculum for the Compulsory School, Preschool Class and School-Age Educare (Revised 2018)

This course introduces students to the world of crafts, fostering creativity and practical skills through working with various materials and tools. The curriculum emphasizes a process where thinking, sensory experiences, and action intertwine to develop students' ability to design, create, and evaluate their work. Students also learn about the aesthetic and cultural significance of crafts in different societies and throughout history.

Year 3

  • Materials, Tools, and Techniques: Students explore the properties and uses of metals, textiles, and wood. They learn the names and safe handling of basic hand tools and instruments. Simple crafting techniques, such as working with wire, sawing, and twisting materials, are introduced. Students also learn to interpret and follow simple sketches and work descriptions, connecting them to basic calculations.
  • Working Processes: Students are introduced to the different stages of a craft project, from initial idea development and consideration of important factors to communication and assessment of the work process. They explore the possibilities offered by various materials, instruments, and tools.
  • Aesthetic and Cultural Expressions: Students use narratives as inspiration and models for their own creative ideas. They learn how color, form, and materials contribute to the expressive qualities of a craft object.
  • Crafts in Society: Students explore the function and meaning of craft objects in both utilitarian and decorative contexts. They learn about the origins of some craft materials, such as wool and common Swedish wood types.
