Sami Education in Sweden

Sami education in Sweden aims to provide Sami children with education while preserving and developing the Sami language and culture. Sami children have the option of attending Sami schools (sameskolor) which are part of the public school system. These schools follow the Swedish national curriculum but also incorporate Sami language, culture, and traditions. Sami schools typically cover grades 1-6. After completing Sami school, students transition to the regular Swedish school system for the remaining compulsory years. In addition to Sami schools, Sami language and culture are also integrated into the curriculum of some mainstream schools. The Sami language is recognized as a minority language in Sweden and can be used in official settings in certain municipalities. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize the Sami language and ensure its continued use and transmission to future generations.
