Swedish Gymnasieprogram - Child and Recreation Programme (Barn- och fritidsprogrammet)

The Child and Recreation Programme (Barn- och fritidsprogrammet) is a vocational programme within the Swedish upper-secondary education system (gymnasieskolan). This program prepares students for careers working with people of all ages in pedagogical, social, and health-promoting contexts.

Programme Structure

The Child and Recreation Programme offers two specializations (inriktningar):

  • Pedagogical and Social Work (Pedagogiskt och socialt arbete): This specialization focuses on child development, learning, and social interaction. Students gain practical skills in caring for and educating children and youth.
  • Recreation and Health (Fritid och hälsa): This specialization emphasizes leisure activities, health promotion, and leadership skills. Students learn how to plan, organize, and lead various activities for different age groups.

Both specializations include courses that provide a foundation for further studies in related fields. Starting in Autumn 2023, courses required for basic university eligibility are included in the program structure for all vocational programs.

Courses

The curriculum covers a range of subjects relevant to working with children, youth, and adults in various settings. Example courses include:

  • English
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Aesthetic Communication

  • Childcare provider (Barnskötare)
  • Teaching assistant (Elevassistent)

The programme also provides a pathway to further education in areas such as teaching, social work, and healthcare.
