Swedish Mellanstadiet (Grade 4) School Syllabus - Swedish

The Swedish Mellanstadiet (grades 4-6) is the second stage of compulsory schooling in Sweden, following Lågstadiet (grades 1-3) and preceding Högstadiet (grades 7-9). Students typically begin Mellanstadiet around age 10.

The curriculum for Mellanstadiet, as part of the compulsory school system (Grundskolan), is governed by the national curriculum, Lgr22, implemented in Autumn 2022. Lgr22 emphasizes a lifelong desire to learn and respect for human rights.

Swedish Subject in Mellanstadiet:

The Swedish subject in Mellanstadiet focuses on developing reading and writing skills, building upon the foundation established in earlier grades. Specific course syllabi exist for Swedish in grades 4-6, covering various aspects of the language. For instance, one course introduces different models of approaching literature and emphasizes book discussions.

Curriculum Overview:

The Swedish compulsory school curriculum includes 16 subjects: Swedish, mathematics, physical education, English, handicrafts, music, visual arts, technology, physics, chemistry, biology, history, social studies, religion, geography, and home economics. All schools, including private ones, follow the same national curriculum.

Key Aspects of Mellanstadiet Curriculum (Lgr22):

  • Swimming: By the end of grade 6, students are expected to be able to swim 200 meters, including 50 meters of crawl.
  • First Aid: First aid is a central component of the curriculum for grades 4-6. HLR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is introduced in grades 7-9.
  • Mathematics: Changes in Lgr22 include the introduction of unit conversions in Mellanstadiet when students compare, estimate, and measure.
