Swedish Mellanstadiet (Grade 4) Physical Education Syllabus

Purpose:
The purpose of physical education is to develop students' all-around movement skills and an interest in being physically active, both indoors and outdoors. The curriculum aims to introduce students to a variety of activities and develop their understanding of how physical activity impacts their health and well-being throughout their lives. Students will learn how to plan, execute, and evaluate different movement activities, fostering collaboration and respect for others. The curriculum also emphasizes developing a positive body image and confidence in one's physical abilities. Outdoor activities and understanding the value of spending time in nature are also important components. Safety and risk assessment in various physical activities are addressed, including how to act in emergency situations.
Central Content (Grades 4-6):
- Movement: Compound basic movements combined with gymnastics equipment and other tools. Various games, sports, and dances, both indoors and outdoors, including movements to music. Swimming in prone and supine positions.
- Health and Lifestyle: Physical and mental effects of different training forms. Cultural and geographical conditions in the local environment that influence the choice of physical activities. Injury prevention, such as through warm-up. Terminology related to experiences of various physical activities, lifestyle choices, body image, and self-esteem.
- Outdoor Life and Excursions: Orienting in the nearby natural and outdoor environment using maps, with and without digital tools. Map structure and symbols. Games and other physical activities in varied natural and outdoor environments during different seasons. Rights and responsibilities in nature according to the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten). Safety and consideration during training, play, sports, and outdoor activities. Water safety and safety on ice. Handling emergency situations in and near water with rescue equipment.
Knowledge Requirements (End of Grade 6):
- Movement: Participate in games, sports, and dances involving compound basic movements in different environments, adapting movements to the activity. Adapt movements to rhythm and beat in music and dance. Swim 200 meters, including 50 meters in supine position. Discuss personal experiences of physical activities and provide reasoned arguments about how the activities can affect health and physical ability.
- Planning and Execution: Carry out various activities in natural and outdoor environments, adapting to different conditions and the Right of Public Access. Orient in familiar environments using maps.
- Safety and Prevention: Describe how to prevent injuries related to games, sports, and physical activities. Handle emergency situations in water with rescue equipment during different seasons.
