Swedish Gymnasieprogram - Humanities Programme (Humanistiska programmet)

The Humanities Programme within the Swedish Gymnasieprogram focuses on language, culture, and societal structures. It provides a broad education, preparing students for university studies in humanities-related fields, rather than specializing in a specific vocation during upper-secondary education. The program develops critical thinking, analytical skills, and communication skills, equipping students to describe, interpret, and critically analyze human actions and expressions.

Core Subjects

The program centers around language, literature, history, cultural history, and philosophy. Students explore human culture and history from various perspectives, delving into different ways of thinking and expressing oneself. They also examine cultural heritage, contemporary culture, and intercultural issues.

Specializations (Inriktningar)

The Humanities Programme offers three specializations:

  • Culture: This specialization delves into culture and aesthetic expressions, literature, philosophy, psychology, and the interplay between culture and human beings. Students learn to describe, analyze, and reflect on culture from diverse perspectives.
  • Language: This specialization allows students to deepen their knowledge of modern languages, such as French, Spanish, and German. It also explores the connection between language, culture, and society.
  • Language and Text: This specialization focuses on developing linguistic proficiency and creativity in both spoken and written forms. Students learn how to use language effectively for communication, reflection, and learning. They also develop skills in argumentation, critical analysis of texts, and distinguishing between facts, values, and reasoning. Within this specialization, students can choose to further specialize in one of the modern languages, reaching a higher level of proficiency than in other upper-secondary programs. This multilingualism opens up opportunities for studying or working abroad.

Future Prospects

The Humanities Programme is designed to be preparatory for higher education, primarily within the humanities but also within social sciences. Graduates can pursue a wide range of careers, including cultural historian, linguist, literary scholar, psychologist, journalist, teacher, or social worker.
