Moderna språk (Modern Languages) in the Swedish Gymnasieskolan

Moderna språk, encompassing all languages except Swedish, Swedish as a Second Language, English, Classical Greek, Latin, and Sign Language, is a subject in the Swedish upper secondary school system (Gymnasieskolan). The most commonly offered modern languages are Spanish, German, and French. While Sign Language can provide merit points for university applications, it is not classified as a modern language within this curriculum.

Gy11 (Current Curriculum)

Under the Gy11 framework, Moderna språk courses are structured in levels, typically from 1 to 4. Students who have studied a modern language in compulsory school usually begin at level 3 in upper secondary school. Achieving a passing grade in level 3 qualifies students for merit points. Moderna språk is compulsory in some programs, such as the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Economics programs. In other programs, it may be offered as an elective or within program specializations.

Gy25 (Upcoming Curriculum - Effective July 1, 2025)

The Gy25 reform introduces significant changes to the Moderna språk curriculum. A key change is the shift from course-based grades to subject-based grades. This means students will receive a final grade for the entire subject of Moderna språk, rather than individual grades for each course level. Additionally, Moderna språk will be divided into several subjects with different levels, likely impacting how information is presented and courses are structured. More information on the specific structure and content of the Gy25 Moderna språk curriculum will be available closer to its implementation date.
