Sweden Year 6 Physics Curriculum (Grundskola)

The Swedish curriculum separates science into biology, chemistry, and physics, each with distinct aims, core content, and knowledge requirements. Physics in Year 6 (mellanstadiet) is part of the compulsory school (grundskola) system. Students typically enter Year 6 at age 12.

Curriculum Focus:

The Year 6 Physics curriculum emphasizes a practical, exploratory approach to learning. It aims to develop students' knowledge of physics concepts within the context of nature and society, fostering curiosity and interest in further study.

Core Content (Grades 4-6):

  • Physics in Nature and Society: This includes the indestructibility of energy and different forms of energy, energy conversion and energy transfer, simple electrical circuits, and the relationship between electricity and magnetism.
  • The Universe and Earth: This covers the Earth's place in the universe, the solar system, stars, and other celestial bodies, as well as the history of the Earth and the development of life.

Assessment:

National tests are administered in Year 6, covering Swedish/Swedish as a second language, mathematics, and English. While there isn't a specific national test solely for physics in Year 6, the science aspects are integrated into the overall science curriculum assessment. Analysis and discussion of standardized tests in science, with a focus on content validity, are available.

Resources:

Teachers have access to resources such as Teknik&Natur, a website designed for K-6 teachers. The Swedish National Resource Centre for Physics Education provides further support.
