Introduction to Geography

Geography helps us understand the world around us, including different places, how they are formed and change, and how people interact with their environment. It also helps us understand how to use the Earth's resources responsibly for a sustainable future.

Key Concepts (Years 1-3)

  • Living Together: This explores how people live together in different families and communities, including norms, rules, and relationships. It also touches upon migration within and between countries and its impact on children and families. Additionally, it covers traffic rules and safety.
  • Living in the Neighborhood: This focuses on the local environment, including natural conditions like land, water, and climate, and how they influence settlements. It explores the history of the local area, including how places, buildings, and objects reflect past living conditions. It also introduces key societal functions like healthcare, emergency services, and schools, as well as local occupations and activities. The role of Christianity in the school and local area in the past is also examined, along with other religions and places of worship in the neighborhood.
  • Living in the World: This expands the geographical perspective to encompass the globe, including continents, oceans, and countries. It explores human origins, migration patterns, and the development of agriculture. Different historical periods such as the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age are introduced. It also touches upon mythology, religious ceremonies, symbols, and narratives from different cultures, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Basic human rights and environmental issues are also introduced. Finally, it introduces basic concepts of money and its use.
  • Exploring Reality: This section focuses on developing skills for understanding and exploring the world. It includes methods for searching for information, assessing sources, and using tools like maps, globes, and compasses. It introduces spatial concepts like place, location, and boundaries, as well as timelines and time concepts (past, present, future).
