Swiss Secondary II Education

Swiss Secondary II education, following compulsory lower secondary education, offers diverse paths for students aged 15-19, preparing them for either vocational training or tertiary education.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Around two-thirds of students choose VET, combining on-the-job training with classroom learning. This dual-track system allows students to gain practical experience while earning a federally recognized qualification. VET programs last two to four years and cover a wide range of professions. The Federal Vocational Baccalaureate supplements VET with broader general education, enabling access to universities of applied sciences.

Matura (University Entrance Qualification)

The Matura is the pathway to Swiss universities and federal institutes of technology. It involves a rigorous curriculum typically spanning three years, culminating in a comprehensive exam. The Matura covers a broad range of subjects, including languages, mathematics, sciences, and humanities. Successful completion grants access to all Swiss universities and is recognized internationally.

Curriculum

The Swiss Secondary II curriculum varies depending on the chosen path (VET or Matura) and the canton. However, some common elements include:

  • Languages: The local cantonal language, a second national language, and English are typically required.
  • Mathematics and Science: These subjects are core components of both VET and Matura programs.
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: Subjects like history, geography, and economics are also included.
  • Vocational Training (VET): Practical training in a chosen profession, combined with theoretical instruction at a vocational school.

Types of Schools

  • Gymnasium/Kantonsschule: These schools prepare students for the Matura.
  • Vocational Schools: Offer practical and theoretical training in various professions.
  • Specialized Schools: Cater to specific fields, such as art or music.

This structure allows students to pursue their interests and talents while gaining a high-quality education that prepares them for their future careers.
