Switzerland Grade 2 Social Sciences and Humanities (Räume, Zeiten, Gesellschaften)

The Swiss curriculum framework, Lehrplan 21, outlines the learning objectives and competencies for all subjects, including Social Sciences and Humanities, known as "Räume, Zeiten, Gesellschaften" (RZG) in German. This framework is implemented by each canton, resulting in some variations in the specific details of the curriculum.

RZG integrates geography and history, aiming to develop students' understanding of spatial relationships, historical developments, and societal structures. The curriculum emphasizes the development of competencies, which are specific skills and abilities students should acquire. These competencies are often categorized into broader areas, such as:

  • Spatial awareness and orientation: Understanding maps, locations, and geographical features.
  • Historical understanding: Analyzing past events, timelines, and cause-and-effect relationships.
  • Societal structures and processes: Exploring different cultures, communities, and forms of governance.

Lehrplan 21 is structured in cycles, with Grade 2 belonging to Cycle 1 (Kindergarten and Grades 1-2). While the specific competencies for Grade 2 RZG in Zurich remain elusive, the overall goals of the curriculum are to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a sense of responsibility towards society and the environment. The curriculum encourages active learning through exploration, investigation, and collaboration. It also emphasizes the connection between RZG and other subjects, such as "Natur, Mensch, Gesellschaft" (NMG) in Cycle 1, which encompasses natural sciences, social studies, and personal development.
