Switzerland Pre-University/Vocational School Subjects (Students Age 17-18)
Pre-University Education (Swiss Matura)
The Swiss Matura is the standard pre-university qualification in Switzerland, granting access to Swiss universities. It is a broad qualification, covering thirteen subjects. The core subjects include:
- Languages: Three languages are required, typically the student's native language, a second national language, and English.
- Mathematics: Mathematics is a compulsory subject.
- Natural Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are included in the natural sciences component.
- Social Sciences and Humanities: Subjects like History and Geography fall under this category.
- Arts: Music and/or artistic design are typically offered.
Additional subjects may vary depending on the specific Matura program and the canton. Some examples include Applied Mathematics, Informatics (Computer Science), Philosophy, and Business & Law.
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
The Swiss VET system offers an alternative pathway for students after lower secondary education. It combines practical training with theoretical instruction.
- Dual System: The VET system primarily operates on a dual-track model. Apprenticeships, lasting three to four days a week, provide practical training in a company setting. One or two days a week are dedicated to theoretical instruction at a vocational school, covering both vocational and general education subjects.
- Age of Entry: Most students begin their apprenticeships between the ages of 15 and 18, with some starting between 19 and 25.
- Variety of Options: A wide range of vocational training programs are available, catering to diverse interests and career aspirations.
- Federal Vocational Baccalaureate: Students in VET programs can also pursue a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate, which enhances their educational qualifications and opens doors to higher education.
