Second National Language in Swiss Pre-University/Vocational Education
In Switzerland, language learning is a key component of education. Students are required to learn a second national language (German, French, or Italian, different from their first language) in addition to their local cantonal language and English. This multilingual approach aims to foster understanding and communication across the different linguistic regions of the country.
While the specific curriculum and implementation may vary among cantons, the second national language is typically introduced during primary school, continuing through lower and upper secondary levels. English is usually introduced later, often around age 9. Although there are four national languages (including Romansh), students generally focus on two, plus English.
The second national language requirement is not directly tied to a specific pre-university exam or certificate. However, proficiency in multiple languages is considered beneficial for university studies and future career prospects, particularly within the federal administration. Specific language requirements for university admission may vary depending on the institution and program of study. |
