Form III

  • The Development of Capitalism and its Impact on Africa: This topic explores the rise of capitalism in Europe and its impact on African societies, including the development of colonial systems. Students will learn about the different colonial administrative and economic systems, and their impact on social services such as education, health, water, and housing. They will also examine the relationship between colonial systems and current African systems.
    • Nationalist Movements in Africa: This topic examines the rise of nationalist movements in Africa, including the internal and external forces that led to their emergence. Students will learn about pre-nationalist movements (religious, peasants, welfare, and workers associations) and their relationship to mass movements. They will also assess the lessons that current African countries can learn from these movements.

Form IV

  • Nation-Building in Post-Colonial Africa: This topic explores the concept and origin of nation-building in post-colonial Africa, including the strategies used in different countries. Students will evaluate the achievements and challenges of nation-building in independent African countries. They will also carry out a project on nation-building between the 1960s and 1970s, using one African country as a case study.
    • Regional and International Affairs: This topic examines the origin and development of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU/African Union) and other economic regional groupings in Africa (e.g., EAC, SADC, ECOWAS). Students will assess the performance of continental and regional integration efforts in Africa. They will also appraise African participation in the United Nations and its agencies (UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, UNESCO, UNCHR, FAO).
