Tanzania Form 1 Mathematics Syllabus

This syllabus outlines the topics covered in Form 1 Mathematics in Tanzania. It aims to equip students with a foundational understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, enabling them to solve practical problems and develop critical thinking abilities. The syllabus follows a competence-based approach, focusing on what students should be able to do by the end of the course.

Numbers

  • Base Ten Numeration: Students will learn about place value, reading and writing numbers up to one billion, and applying numbers in daily life.
  • Natural and Whole Numbers: This topic covers distinguishing between natural and whole numbers, identifying even, odd, and prime numbers, finding factors and multiples, and calculating the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM).
  • Integers: Students will learn to identify, add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers, and perform mixed operations.
  • Fractions: This topic covers proper, improper, and mixed numbers, comparing and simplifying fractions, performing operations with fractions, and solving word problems involving fractions.
  • Decimals and Percentages: Students will learn about the concept of decimals, converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, performing operations with decimals, and applying percentages in daily life.
  • Rational, Irrational, and Real Numbers: This topic introduces the concepts of rational, irrational, and real numbers, including finding absolute values and solving related practical problems.

Units

  • Units of Length, Mass, Time, and Capacity: Students will learn to convert between different units of measurement and perform computations involving these units.

Approximations

  • Rounding off Numbers and Significant Figures: This topic covers rounding off whole numbers and decimals, significant figures, and using approximations in calculations.

Geometry

  • Points, Lines, and Angles: Students will learn about points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, measuring angles, and constructing geometric figures.
  • Polygons and Regions: This topic covers describing polygons and regions, constructing different types of triangles and quadrilaterals, and exploring properties of circles.

Algebra

  • Algebraic Operations: Students will learn to use symbols to form algebraic expressions, simplify expressions, and solve equations with one and two unknowns.
  • Inequalities: This topic covers solving linear inequalities in one unknown and forming inequalities from practical situations.

Ratios, Profit, and Loss

  • Ratios and Proportions: Students will learn to express ratios in simplest form, divide quantities into proportional parts, and solve ratio and proportion problems.
  • Profit and Loss: This topic covers calculating profit and loss, percentage profit and loss, and simple interest.

Coordinate Geometry

  • Coordinates of a Point: Students will learn to read, plot, and locate points on a coordinate plane.
  • Gradient (Slope) of a Line: This topic covers calculating the gradient of a line given two points.
  • Equation of a Line: Students will learn to find the equation of a line given different information, such as gradient and intercept or two points.
  • Graphs of Linear Equations: This topic covers forming tables of values, drawing graphs of linear equations, and solving simultaneous equations graphically.

Perimeters and Areas

  • Perimeters of Triangles and Quadrilaterals: Students will learn to find the perimeters of triangles and quadrilaterals.
  • Circumference of a Circle: This topic covers estimating the value of pi and calculating the circumference of a circle.
  • Areas of Rectangles, Triangles, Trapeziums, Parallelograms, and Circles: Students will learn to calculate the areas of various shapes.
