Tanzania Ordinary Secondary Education Form III-IV Curriculum - Chinese

The Chinese language is offered as a subject in the Tanzania Ordinary Secondary Education curriculum for Form I-IV. The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) has developed a syllabus to guide the teaching and learning of Chinese in secondary schools. This syllabus aims to introduce the Chinese language and complement the broader objectives of the Education and Training Policy. In 2023, TIE announced plans to further improve the Chinese language syllabus for secondary schools.

A pilot program introducing Mandarin Chinese was implemented in Tanzanian secondary schools, including Zanaki and Benjamin Mkapa secondary schools in Dar es Salaam. Twelve Chinese language teachers were sent to participate in this program.

The 2023 Education and Training Policy emphasizes skills development relevant to the job market, including critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and digital literacy. The new curriculum for basic education aims to improve employment opportunities by focusing on building these skills. Subjects for Standard Three and Four include Kiswahili, English, French, Chinese, Arabic, Mathematics, history of Tanzania, and ethical values.
