Tanzania Ordinary Secondary Education Form III-IV Curriculum - English Language

This curriculum is designed to equip students with the necessary English language skills for effective communication in various social settings, academic pursuits, and future employment opportunities. The curriculum emphasizes communicative language teaching (CLT), focusing on practical application of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It also aims to cultivate 21st-century skills and positive attitudes for national development. The medium of instruction in secondary education is English.

Form III

1. Demonstrate Mastery of English Language Skills: This section focuses on refining students' existing language skills and expanding their vocabulary. Students will practice listening comprehension, pronunciation, and oral communication skills. They will also develop vocabulary through various activities like discussions, dialogues, and extensive reading. Grammar and vocabulary usage are emphasized in both oral and written tasks.

2. Comprehend Oral and Written Information: Students will enhance their comprehension skills by distinguishing facts from opinions, expressing connotative meanings, and paraphrasing texts. They will also practice responding to various oral messages and making comments on them. Activities include analyzing various texts, drawing inferences, and relating core messages to real-life experiences.

3. Communicate Effectively in Different Contexts: This section emphasizes effective communication in various settings. Students will practice expressing opinions and facts in mass communication contexts, using appropriate non-verbal cues, and responding to public messages. They will also learn to evaluate information received through mass communication.

4. Provide Basic English Language Services to the Community: This section introduces students to basic language services. Students will learn the principles of editing and proofreading, applying them to various texts. They will also explore the concepts and principles of interpretation and translation, practicing with simple texts in a school context.

5. Manage Information Search from Different Sources for Lifelong Learning: This section focuses on information management skills. Students will learn strategies for organizing information from various sources, sorting and categorizing it into related themes, and compiling searched information.

6. Appreciate and Create Literary Works: This section introduces students to literary analysis and creation. Students will assess the language used in selected poems and plays, comparing their own values and perspectives with those implied in the texts. They will also analyze different genres of written literature and their conventions, critiquing selected poems and plays based on form and content. Finally, they will compose and publish free verse poems.

Form IV

1. Demonstrate Mastery of English Language Skills: This section focuses on advanced application of language skills. Students will prepare and deliver short speeches on common topics, compose different types of essays, and refine their grammar and vocabulary usage.

2. Comprehend Oral and Written Information: Students will analyze texts to understand the author's motives, deliver oral presentations on text content, and draw inferences. They will also practice deducing main ideas from oral presentations and examining information from various sources. Relating core messages to real-life experiences is also emphasized.

3. Communicate Effectively in Different Contexts: This section focuses on nuanced communication skills. Students will express feelings and emotions using appropriate phrases, deliver different kinds of speeches, and negotiate solutions to problems using formulaic language. They will also write application letters, speeches on various topics, and Curriculum Vitae (CVs). Socio-cultural analysis of functional texts is also covered.

4. Provide Basic English Language Services to the Community: This section builds upon the skills introduced in Form III. Students will edit and proofread texts in various contexts, interpret messages in informal and formal settings, and translate texts in different contexts. They will also learn to manage short translation and editing projects using computer-assisted tools.

5. Appreciate and Create Literary Works: This section focuses on deeper engagement with literature. Students will analyze a selected novella, assessing its language, comparing their own values with those in the text, and dramatizing episodes. They will also examine socio-political and cultural issues portrayed in the novella and relate the context of the story to real-life experiences. Finally, they will apply literary skills to compose and publish short stories.
