Tanzania Standard 4 Science and Technology Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the key competencies, specific competencies, learning activities, assessment criteria, and benchmarks for Standard 4 Science and Technology. It emphasizes a practical, hands-on approach to learning, encouraging investigations, experiments, and the application of scientific principles to everyday life. Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic (3Rs) are integrated throughout the subject. The curriculum aims to equip students with critical thinking skills, curiosity, and creativity in science and technology.

1.0 Performing Investigations and Discoveries in Science and Technology

This competency focuses on developing students' investigative skills and their understanding of the environment and its components.

  • 1.1 Investigating Things in the Environment: Students will identify actions that negatively impact the environment and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and air safety. They will also conduct experiments to verify the importance of essential resources like water, heat, air, light, and soil for living things.
  • 1.2 Identifying Various Types of Energy and Their Uses: Students will identify sources of electric energy and conduct experiments to explore how light passes through different materials and how shadows are formed.
  • 1.3 Identifying Scientific and Technological Theories: Students will perform experiments to understand the three states of water and investigate concepts like freezing and boiling points.

2.0 Applying Fundamentals of Science and Technology

This competency focuses on the practical application of scientific knowledge and skills, including the use of technology and basic scientific tools.

  • 2.1 Applying Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Students will identify different means of communication and demonstrate the use of radios and television sets. They will also learn to value and care for ICT tools.
  • 2.2 Mastering Scientific Skills: Students will explain safety precautions for using refrigerators and cookers and demonstrate their proper usage.
  • 2.3 Performing Scientific Experiments: Students will conduct experiments on the needs of living things, applying scientific procedures and demonstrating an understanding of the experimental process.

3.0 Maintaining Health and the Environment

This competency focuses on promoting healthy habits, environmental awareness, and basic first aid skills.

  • 3.1 Applying Principles of Hygiene for Good Health and Environment: Students will identify sources of dirt and waste in the environment and demonstrate the habit of maintaining cleanliness at home and school. They will also practice giving First Aid to a fainted person.
  • 3.2 Applying Health Principles for Good Health: Students will identify infectious and non-infectious diseases and explain ways to prevent and control epidemics. They will also learn about body immunity and the importance of caring for and respecting people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • 3.3 Identifying Various Systems in the Human Body: Students will explain the defects that may occur in the digestive system and discuss habits to prevent these problems. They will also demonstrate proper eating habits.
