Tanzania Standard 4 Social Studies Curriculum

The following information is based on the Social Studies Syllabus for Primary School Education, Standard III-VII published by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) in 2019.

Standard 4

  • Conserving the environment surrounding the community: This topic focuses on identifying actions that contribute to environmental destruction within the local community (village or street) and clarifying environmental conservation activities. Students are expected to analyze the importance of a clean environment and explain the stages of planting and maintaining vegetation in the school compound.
  • Keeping records of historical events: Students will identify different events occurring in society and analyze ways of keeping historical records.
  • Applying knowledge of weather conditions in daily activities: This involves elaborating on the concept of weather and identifying changes in weather conditions.
  • Promoting Tanzanian culture: Students will identify things that build cooperation in society and assess things that maintain cooperation.
  • Building good relationships with members of the surrounding community: This topic explores the concept of relationship in the community, analyzes the student's clan, identifies ancient communal societies, and analyzes ancient feudal societies.
  • Honouring our heroes in society: Students will identify Tanzanian heroes, analyze the contemporary invasion of Tanzania, and assess the contributions of Tanzanian heroes.
  • Using maps in different environments: This topic covers drawing a map of the school and showing its symbols, drawing cardinal points, and using cardinal points to indicate the direction of things in the environment.
  • Recognising the solar system: Students will analyze the solar system, identify natural light in the environment, and explain its importance.
  • Appreciating and protecting natural resources: This involves identifying resources available in villages or streets, analyzing ways of conserving resources, and assessing resources available in the district.
  • Recognising production activities in the society: Students will recognize production activities in the village or street and clarify the challenges in the production of wealth.
  • Applying entrepreneurial skills in social activities: This topic focuses on identifying opportunities available in areas with resources like minerals, animal parks, and forests.
