Tanzania Standard 1 Curriculum - Arithmetic
This curriculum focuses on building foundational skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic (3Rs). It is designed for Standard 1 pupils in Tanzania. The curriculum is developed by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE).
Arithmetic (Numeracy)
The arithmetic component of the Standard 1 curriculum aims to develop a pupil's understanding of numbers and basic mathematical operations.
- Number Recognition (1-100): Pupils learn to recognize numbers both in numerals and words. They practice tracing, copying, and writing numbers 1-10. Activities include using objects from the environment to master number concepts and arranging numbers sequentially.
- Basic Operations:
- Addition: Pupils are introduced to the concept of addition using real objects and ICT tools. They practice adding numbers with sums not exceeding 99.
- Subtraction: Pupils learn the concept of subtraction using real objects and ICT tools, practicing subtraction with numbers in the range of 0-99.
- Shapes: Pupils learn to identify basic shapes like circles, triangles, and squares.
- Other Mathematical Concepts: The syllabus also covers other mathematical concepts such as place value (tens and ones), fractions (whole, half, quarter, third, and two-thirds), and measurement skills. These concepts are taught using real objects and ICT tools.
Other Subjects
Besides arithmetic, the Standard 1 curriculum also includes:
- Listening and Speaking: Pupils develop listening and speaking skills through activities like imitating sounds, relating words to objects, following instructions, introducing themselves and others, naming body parts, and using common greetings.
- Reading: Pupils learn to recognize letter sounds, blend sounds to form words, pronounce words with short vowel sounds, and read simple sentences. They also practice using basic punctuation marks.
- Writing: Pupils develop pre-writing skills through activities that build fine motor skills. They learn to write small and capital letters, join letters to form words, and join words to form simple sentences.
- Kiswahili: Pupils develop basic Kiswahili language skills.
- Culture, Art, and Sports: Pupils learn to appreciate their own culture and that of others, demonstrate religious tolerance and ethical practices, create simple works of art, and participate in various sports.
- Health and Environment: Pupils learn to care for their health and the environment and protect themselves from hazardous situations.
This comprehensive curriculum aims to provide a well-rounded education for Standard 1 pupils in Tanzania, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge in various areas. |
