Tanzania Standard 1 Curriculum - English

This curriculum introduces seven key competences: Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Kumudu Stadi za Awali za Kiswahili, Appreciate culture, art and sports, and Care for health and environment. These competences aim to build a strong foundation in Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic (3Rs) in both English and Kiswahili, introduce basic computer skills, and foster a positive attitude towards culture, art, sports, health, and the environment.

1. Listening and Speaking

  • Objective: Develop listening and speaking skills in different contexts.
  • Activities:
      • Imitating different sounds (animal sounds, clapping, etc.)
      • Relating words to familiar objects in the environment (home, school, market, etc.)
      • Following simple instructions (stand up, sit down, etc.)
      • Introducing oneself and others.
      • Naming parts of the body.
      • Using common greetings and farewells.

2. Reading

  • Objective: Develop reading skills, including recognizing letter sounds, letter-sound relationships, reading fluently, and reading comprehension.
  • Activities:
      • Pronouncing letter sounds (a-z).
      • Identifying individual sounds in simple words (initial, middle, and last sounds).
      • Identifying rhyming words and words with the same first sound (alliteration).
      • Blending individual sounds to form simple words.
      • Pronouncing words with short vowel sounds (e.g., bat, mat, red).
      • Associating letters with sounds.
      • Reading single-syllable words with simple structures (e.g., cat, hat).
      • Reading words with two consonant clusters (e.g., bl, cl, br).
      • Reading words with consonant digraphs (e.g., th, ch, sh).
      • Reading words with vowel digraphs (e.g., ai, ay, ee).
      • Reading short, simple sentences.
      • Using basic punctuation marks (full stop and question mark).
      • Reading grade-appropriate texts with proper pronunciation.

3. Writing

  • Objective: Develop pre-writing and basic writing skills.
  • Activities:
      • Practicing activities that build fine motor skills (holding a pencil, sitting posture, molding letter shapes).
      • Tracing letter shapes.
      • Writing small and capital letters step-by-step.
      • Joining letters to form simple words.
      • Joining words to form simple sentences.

4. Numeracy (in English)

  • Objective: Recognize the concept of numbers and use mathematical operations and concepts.
  • Activities:
      • Mastering the concept of numbers using objects from the environment.
      • Identifying numbers in numerals and words (1-100).
      • Tracing, copying, and writing numbers (1-10).
      • Arranging numbers sequentially (1-100).
      • Identifying numbers in tens and ones.
      • Using real objects or ICT to understand addition and subtraction.
      • Adding numbers to get a sum not exceeding 99.
      • Subtracting numbers in the range of 0-99.
      • Identifying basic shapes (circle, triangle, and square).

5. Kumudu Stadi za Awali za Kiswahili (This section pertains to Kiswahili language skills and is therefore not detailed here).

6. Appreciate Culture, Art, and Sports (This section is not specific to English language skills and is therefore not detailed here).

7. Care for Health and Environment (This section is not specific to English language skills and is therefore not detailed here).
