Tanzania Standard 7 Curriculum - English Language

This curriculum for English Language in Tanzania covers Standards III-VII and is based on the Basic Education Curriculum of 2015, updated in 2019. The curriculum emphasizes the development of four key language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Standard III

This level focuses on building a strong foundation in English. Key competencies include comprehending oral and written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and acquiring and using vocabulary across all four language skills. Specific competencies include listening and comprehending oral information and phonemic symbols, pronouncing and reading phonemic symbols, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and developing and using appropriate vocabulary through listening, speaking, and reading.

Standard IV

Building upon the foundation laid in Standard III, this level aims to develop a balance across reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Key competencies include comprehending oral and written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and acquiring and using vocabulary across all four language skills. Specific competencies include listening and comprehending oral information, reading and comprehending written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and developing and using appropriate vocabulary through listening, speaking, and reading.

Standard V

This level continues to develop well-rounded English language users. Key competencies include comprehending oral and written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and acquiring and using vocabulary across all four language skills. Specific competencies include listening and comprehending oral information, reading and comprehending written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and developing and using appropriate vocabulary through listening, speaking, and reading. Emphasis is placed on applying all four language skills in practical situations.

Standard VI

This level focuses on refining the skills learned in previous standards. Key competencies include comprehending oral and written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and acquiring and using vocabulary across all four language skills. Specific competencies include listening and comprehending information, reading and comprehending written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and developing and using appropriate vocabulary through listening, speaking, and reading. Students are expected to demonstrate increased proficiency in all areas.

Standard VII

The final standard of the primary curriculum aims to produce competent English language users. Key competencies include comprehending oral and written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and acquiring and using vocabulary across all four language skills. Specific competencies include listening and comprehending oral information, reading and comprehending written information, communicating simple ideas through speech and writing, and developing and using appropriate vocabulary through listening, speaking, and reading. Students are expected to apply their skills independently and in a variety of contexts. Emphasis is placed on using the language for practical purposes, including academic and social interactions.

PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination)

The PSLE is a national examination taken by Standard 7 students in Tanzania. It assesses their competency in various subjects, including English Language, and serves as the gateway to secondary education. The English Language examination assesses the competencies acquired throughout Standards III-VII, with a focus on comprehension, communication, and vocabulary.
