Tanzania Standard 7 Curriculum - Mathematics

This course outline is based on the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) Mathematics Syllabus for Primary School Education, Standard III–VII (2019).

Course Objectives:

The objectives of this course are to enable students to:

  • Develop logical thinking.
  • Cultivate curiosity and problem-solving skills.
  • Develop foundational skills in technology, communication, reasoning, and reflection.
  • Develop the ability to analyze and present information.
  • Strengthen understanding of shapes, measurements, and their real-life applications.
  • Build confidence in applying mathematical competencies in everyday life.

Course Structure:

The curriculum is structured around competencies, focusing on practical application and problem-solving. It emphasizes a learner-centered and activity-based approach, moving from concrete to abstract concepts.

Standard III:

  • Numbers and Numeration: Counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 9999; understanding place values; dividing objects into equal groups; introduction to fractions.
  • Patterns: Identifying and extending patterns; arranging numbers in ascending and descending order.
  • Mathematical Operations: Addition and subtraction without and with carrying/regrouping; solving word problems involving addition and subtraction.
  • Number Relations: Telling time; using Tanzanian currency; solving word problems involving money.
  • Measurements: Identifying and using non-standard and standard units of length and weight; measuring, reading, and recording lengths and weights.
  • Shapes and Figures: Identifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes; drawing and creating shapes; recognizing shapes in the environment.
  • Statistics: Reading and interpreting pictorial statistics.

Standard IV:

  • Numbers and Numeration: Counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 99999; place values; Roman numerals.
  • Patterns: Identifying ascending and descending number patterns; finding missing numbers in sequences.
  • Mathematical Operations: Addition and subtraction of numbers up to 99999 with and without carrying/regrouping; multiplication and division of two- and three-digit numbers; operations with fractions with the same denominator.
  • Number Relations: Telling time; operations with time; operations with Tanzanian currency; solving word problems involving money and time.
  • Measurements: Converting and using metric units of length, weight, and volume; measuring and recording volume; solving word problems involving measurements.
  • Shapes and Figures: Drawing straight lines and line segments; measuring perimeters; calculating perimeters of squares, rectangles, and triangles.
  • Statistics: Collecting, recording, and representing data using pictorial statistics.

Standard V:

  • Numbers and Numeration: Counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 999999; place values; comparing fractions; identifying types of fractions; reading and writing decimal numbers up to two decimal places.
  • Patterns: Identifying types of numbers (even, odd, prime); listing factors and multiples; calculating HCF and LCM; calculating squares and exponents; finding square roots.
  • Mathematical Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers up to six digits; operations with fractions with different denominators; operations with decimal numbers up to two decimal places.
  • Number Relations: Creating calendars; converting units of time; operations with Tanzanian currency; solving word problems involving money.
  • Measurements: Operations with metric units of length, weight, and volume; solving word problems involving measurements.
  • Shapes and Figures: Identifying and drawing angles; identifying lines of symmetry; identifying and describing properties of triangles; calculating areas of rectangles, squares, and triangles.
  • Algebra: Formulating and solving simple algebraic equations.
  • Statistics: Calculating averages; reading and interpreting bar graphs.

Standard VI:

  • Numbers and Numeration: Counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 10,000,000; place values; reading and writing decimal numbers up to three decimal places; approximating whole numbers and decimals.
  • Patterns: Calculating GCF and LCM; converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.
  • Mathematical Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers up to ten million; operations with decimal numbers up to three decimal places; operations with integers.
  • Number Relations: Reading and writing time in 12-hour and 24-hour formats; converting between time formats; solving word problems involving time, profit, and loss.
  • Measurements: Operations with metric units of length, weight, and volume; solving word problems involving measurements and angles.
  • Shapes and Figures: Measuring and drawing angles; identifying perpendicular and parallel lines; calculating perimeters and areas of parallelograms and trapeziums; identifying and describing 3D shapes; calculating circumferences, areas, surface areas, and volumes of circles, cylinders, rectangular prisms, and cubes; locating points on a coordinate plane.
  • Algebra: Solving simple algebraic equations; solving word problems involving simple algebraic equations.
  • Statistics: Reading and interpreting pie charts; drawing pie charts; solving word problems involving pie charts.

Standard VII:

  • Numbers and Numeration: Place values of whole numbers up to 1,000,000,000; reading, writing, and performing operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers up to 1,000,000,000.
  • Patterns: Applying BODMAS; simplifying ratios; analyzing exponents; simplifying mathematical sentences involving exponents; calculating square roots.
  • Mathematical Operations: Dividing whole numbers and fractions by fractions and decimals; operations with profit and loss; planning income and expenditure.
  • Measurements: Calculating speed, distance, and time; using the concept of speed to identify moving objects.
  • Shapes and Figures: Identifying and using the Pythagorean theorem; applying the Pythagorean theorem in real-life situations.
  • Algebra: Simplifying and solving algebraic expressions and equations; solving word problems involving algebraic equations.
  • Statistics: Drawing and interpreting line graphs; conducting statistical projects.
