Tanzania Standard 2 Curriculum - Arithmetic
The Tanzania Standard 2 Arithmetic curriculum is part of the broader Numeracy competence. It focuses on developing fundamental arithmetic skills and understanding basic mathematical concepts. The curriculum aims to equip students with the ability to perform basic calculations, understand number relationships, and apply these skills in practical contexts.
Numeracy Competence: Specific Competencies
- 4.1 Recognise the concept of numbers: Students learn to identify and work with numbers up to 100. They practice tracing, copying, and writing numerals, as well as arranging numbers sequentially. Activities involve using real objects and number cards to reinforce understanding.
- 4.2 Use mathematical operations: This competency covers addition and subtraction of numbers within the range of 0-99. Students use real objects and potentially ICT tools to grasp the concepts of these operations. They practice adding numbers to get a sum not exceeding 99 and subtracting numbers within the specified range. The curriculum also introduces the concept of multiplication as repeated addition, using real objects arranged in groups of equal numbers. Single-digit multiplication is also practiced. Similarly, division is introduced as repeated subtraction, with practice dividing numbers up to 100 without remainders.
- 4.3 Use mathematical concepts: Students learn to identify basic shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares. They also work with fractions, recognizing the concepts of whole, half, quarter, third, and two-thirds using real objects and ICT tools. Identifying common fraction symbols (1/4, 1/2, etc.) is also part of this competency. Finally, students develop measurement skills and use basic shapes to create complex shapes.
