Tanzania Standard 2 Kiswahili Curriculum

This curriculum outlines the Kiswahili language component within the broader Standard 2 curriculum, focusing on developing fundamental listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Key Competencies:

  • Kusikiliza na Kuzungumza (Listening and Speaking): Students will develop their ability to understand and use spoken Kiswahili in various contexts. Activities include imitating sounds, relating words to objects, following instructions, introducing oneself and others, naming body parts, and using common greetings.
  • Kusoma (Reading): This competency focuses on developing foundational reading skills. Students will learn to recognize letter sounds, blend sounds to form words, pronounce words with short and long vowel sounds, read simple words and sentences, and use basic punctuation. The curriculum also introduces consonant clusters, digraphs, and multisyllabic words.
  • Kuandika (Writing): Students will develop pre-writing and basic writing skills. Activities include practicing fine motor skills, tracing and writing letters, joining letters to form words, and forming simple sentences. The curriculum emphasizes proper handwriting techniques and the use of joined-up writing.
  • Kumudu Stadi za Awali za Kiswahili: This competency reinforces the core Kiswahili language skills. Students will further develop their abilities in listening, speaking, and reading through activities such as storytelling, answering questions, and reading aloud. They will also learn to identify and manipulate phonemes, recognize letter-sound relationships in more complex words, and understand basic sentence structure.

Learning Activities and Assessment:

The curriculum utilizes a variety of interactive learning activities, including songs, games, role-playing, and the use of technology. Assessment methods include exercises, observation, interviews, checklists, tests, and exams. These assessments focus on evaluating both theoretical understanding and practical application of Kiswahili language skills.
