Mathematics 1A/1B (MA31101/31103)

  • Course Description: This course explores set theory, including finite/infinite sets, subsets, set operations, and Venn diagrams. It also covers properties of relations, such as Cartesian product, domain, range, inverses, and graphical representations. The second half of the semester focuses on symbolic logic, including logical operators, truth tables, equivalence, tautology/contradiction, open sentences with quantifiers, and validity of reasoning.
  • Goals/Expected Learning Outcomes:
      • Apply concepts to real-world problems.
      • Understand properties of the real number system.
      • Perform set operations and interpret Venn diagrams.
      • Perform Cartesian products, find inverse, domain, and range of relations.
      • Apply symbolic logic to simplify complex problems.
      • Perform operations on logical statements using truth tables and equivalent statements.

      • Week 1: Introduction and review of factoring.
      • Week 2: Set notation, finite and infinite sets.
      • Week 3: Set operations (union, intersection, complements).
      • Week 4: Venn diagrams, introduction to relations.
      • Week 5: Cartesian products, domain, and range.
      • Week 6: Graphs and inverse of relations.
      • Week 7: Midterm Examination.
      • Week 8: Introduction to symbolic logic and propositions.
      • Week 9: Logical operators.
      • Week 10: Truth tables.
      • Week 11: Evaluating statements and equivalence.
      • Week 12: Tautology and contradiction.
      • Week 13: Open sentences.
      • Week 14: Quantifiers and their truth value.
      • Week 15: Validity of reasoning.
      • Week 16: Final Examination.

  • Late Policy: Late submissions are accepted up to three days with penalties.
