Thailand Mattayom 2 Curriculum - Thai Language

The Mattayom 2 (Grade 8) Thai Language curriculum, as outlined in the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008), aims to develop well-rounded language skills, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and an appreciation for Thai literary and cultural heritage. The curriculum emphasizes a learner-centered approach, recognizing that all students are capable of learning and self-development.

Reading (Standard T1.1): Students are expected to accurately read aloud poetic pieces in prose and verse. They should be able to capture the essentials and details from their readings, identify cause and effect, and differentiate between facts and opinions. They are also encouraged to write mind-maps to demonstrate understanding and engage in discussions to express opinions and disagreements with their readings.

Writing (Standard T2.1): Students should be able to write in regular script using half spaces between lines. They are expected to write narratives, descriptive texts, and compositions, as well as synopses and reports on their studies and research. They should also be able to analyze, criticize, and express their knowledge, opinions, or disagreements in writing.

Listening, Viewing, and Speaking (Standard T3.1): Students should be able to verbally present the essentials of materials listened to and viewed, and provide summaries. They should also be able to analyze facts, opinions, and the reliability of information from various media sources. Critically analyzing and evaluating materials listened to and viewed, and applying insights gained to their lives is also emphasized. Students are expected to be able to speak on various occasions in line with given objectives and report on subjects or issues from their studies and research.

Principles of Thai Language Usage (Standard T4.1): Students are expected to explain the characteristics of sounds in the Thai language and demonstrate the ability to coin new words. They should be able to analyze the kinds and functions of words in sentences, analyze the differences between spoken and written language, and write verses. They should also be able to distinguish and use idioms, popular sayings, and proverbs, use royal vocabulary, and collect and explain the meanings of foreign words used in the Thai language.

Literature and Literary Works (Standard T5.1): Students should be able to summarize the substance of literature and literary works they read. They should also be able to analyze and criticize these works, providing reasons for their interpretations. Explaining the value of the literature and literary works read, summarizing knowledge and insights from reading for application in real life, and memorizing and reciting prescribed and valuable verses are also part of this standard.
