Thailand Prathom 3 Curriculum - Religion and Culture

The Religion and Culture curriculum for Prathom 3 (Grades 1-3) in Thailand is part of the Social Studies, Religion and Culture learning area within the Basic Education Core Curriculum (2008). Strand 1: Religion, Morality and Ethics

This strand focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of the history, importance, key figures, and moral principles of Buddhism (or the learner's own religion) and other religions. It emphasizes developing proper faith, adhering to moral principles, and promoting peaceful coexistence.

  • Grade 1: Students recount the life of the Buddha (or key figures of their own religion). They learn to appreciate and tell the models of living and insights from disciples' lives, stories of the Buddha's previous lives, tales, and exemplary believers. They learn the meaning and respect for the Triple Gems and observe the principles of the Three Admonitions of the Buddha (or the moral principles of their own religion). They appreciate family members' and other people's good deeds in accordance with religious principles. They learn the names of religions, key figures, and the importance of scriptures.
  • Grade 2: Students tell the importance of Buddhism (or their own religion). They summarize the life of the Buddha (or key figures of their own religion) from birth to ordination. They appreciate and tell models of living and insights from the disciples' lives, stories of the Buddha's previous lives, and exemplary believers. They tell the meaning, importance, and respect for the Triple Gems and observe the principles of the Three Admonitions in Buddhism (or the moral principles of their own religion). They appreciate family members' and other people's good deeds in accordance with religious principles and tell the guidelines for living. They observe the agreements, rules, regulations, orders, and duties required in daily life. They observe Thai manners and show behavior of accepting different ideas, beliefs, and practices without prejudice. They respect their own rights and those of others.
  • Grade 3: Students explain the importance of Buddhism (or their own religion) as a significant foundation of Thai culture. They summarize the life of the Buddha (or key figures of their own religion) from the practice of self-mortification to the Great Decease. They appreciate and tell models of living and insights from the disciples' lives, stories of the Buddha's previous lives, and exemplary believers. They tell the meaning and importance of the Tipitaka (or the scriptures of their own religion). They pay respect to the Triple Gems and observe the principles of the Threefold Learning and the Three Admonitions in Buddhism (or the moral principles of their own religion). They appreciate family members' and other people's good deeds in accordance with religious principles, as well as tell the guidelines for living. They summarize the benefits of and conduct themselves correctly in religious rites and ceremonies and on important religious days. They profess themselves as Buddhists (or believers of their religions).

Strand 2: Civics, Culture and Living in Society

This strand focuses on understanding and practicing good citizenship, observing and preserving Thai traditions and culture, and promoting peaceful coexistence within Thai society and the global community.

  • Grade 1: Students specify the advantages of being a good member of the family and school. They cite examples of their own goodness and that of others, and tell the effects of those good deeds.
  • Grade 2: Students observe the agreements, rules, regulations, orders, and duties required in daily life. They observe Thai manners and show behavior of accepting different ideas, beliefs, and practices without prejudice. They respect their own rights and those of others.
  • Grade 3: Students summarize the benefits of and observe family and local traditions and culture. They tell their own way of life and that of others in diversified cultures. They explain the significance of important official holidays. They cite examples of people whose achievements are beneficial to their communities.
