Thailand Prathom 3 Curriculum - Thai Language

This course emphasizes the acquisition of basic Thai language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary development. Students learn to follow and respond to instructions, ask and answer yes/no questions, and use phrases, short statements, and negative statements with polite ending particles. They also learn polite expressions for making requests, asking pardon, and thanking people, using appropriate pronouns and vocabulary for adults and peers at school.

Reading and Writing: Students learn to write their names, Thai numbers, and basic words (Thai alphabets with sara aa). They are introduced to parts of speech, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, simple classifiers, prepositions, and conjunctions (including “and”/“but”). They also learn about Thai folktales related to Thai lifestyle.

Culture and Etiquette: Students learn appropriate Thai manners for school, including self-introductions, introductions of others, and the proper use of “Wai” for different occasions. They learn about the concept of “grab” (seniority) and appropriate greetings. The curriculum covers Thai holidays, cultural practices, and celebrations, with students actively participating in school cultural activities such as Teacher Appreciation Day, Loy Krathong, Songkran, Rod Nam Dum Hua Ceremony, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Flag Salute. Respect for symbols representing the monarchs, the royal anthem, the Thai flag, and the national anthem is emphasized. Students also learn about general do’s and don’ts in Thailand, as well as geographical features and local products related to Thai cultural events. Students are also expected to take national exams in Thai language and math.
